  • Hooves Dry and Brittle?

Hooves which are brittle can cause the hoof wall to lose its ability to be flexible.  This can lead to pain to the horse and induce lameness. The dryness creates a situation where the cell structure is very brittle.  There is a tendency with hoof movement, for the cells to break the bonds that hold them together, resulting in the hoof wall cracking.  The cracking occurs at the weakest point, often around nail holes or up the hoof wall along the keratin fibres that make up the tubules.

Keratin is an extremely strong protein that is a major component in skin, hair, nails, hooves, horns, and teeth. The entwining and cross-linking, produces strength and toughness within the hoof.

The keratinous wall of the hoof transmits the forces passing between the ground and the bony skeleton of the horse.

The properties of keratin are strongly influenced by their hydration state. This is why it is so important to maintain your horses feet to give them the best change of receiving quality nutrients to help continue healthy growth at the coronet band.

Deep cracks can appear which can lead to other problems such as seedy toe.  Often it is not just the hoof wall that is brittle but also the frog, sole and heel.

Brittle hooves can be very painful and can result in lameness.

    Symptoms may include :

    • Hoof cracking easily
    • Shoes falling off early
    • Trimming is hard work
    • A tendency to contracted heels
